Meet The Artist
Obi-Tabot Obi Tabe was born in Cameroon, West Africa where he completed his primary, secondary and high school education. Prior to his departure to the United States to pursue studies in Art, Obi worked for the National Herbarium in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research as biological/scientific illustrator. He won the position on the strength of his advanced study in Biology and Chemistry, his fastidious attention to scientific detail and remarkable drawing ability.
Obi obtained a Bachelor of Fine Art in Graphic Design from the University of Missouri-Columbia; worked as a freelance graphic artist and scientific illustrator for a few years before deciding on the pharmacy profession. He obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and an MBA in healthcare management from the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Currently a clinical pharmacist, Obi continues to create art pieces that will educate, ennoble, and uplift the viewer, interior decorator and the serious art collector. Some of his artworks appear in private collections, including the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. His artwork and designs are also featured on the front covers and spine of major pharmacy textbooks published by McGraw Hill, New York.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork ranges in style, from representational to abstract expressionism with diverse areas of interest. A variety of themes have been explored, including pharmacy, science, medicine, culture, nature and the human form or morphology with respect to gender, sexuality, ethnicity and social complexity. Often referencing Afrocentric themes, my earlier pieces delved into the socio-cultural values and customs of the peoples of Cameroon in Central/West Africa.
Irrespective of the subject matter, I maintain a level of consistency in the materials, processes and methodology used in my artwork - all paintings are primarily executed in oil on canvas. Swirling geometrical shapes, forms, patterns and colors are used in abstract expressions and representations to depict ideas and concepts. My compositions employ contrast, space, lines, forms, texture and color values to create art pieces that evoke diverse interpretations and visual experiences.
I am leaning more towards abstraction than representational art. Why abstract art? I believe by not creating artwork that represents accurate depiction of visual reality, my viewers are offered the opportunity and more freedom to use their imagination. When reality is absent, you challenge the intellect, and this makes for a more robust and interesting visual experience. That is my view!
I particularly love color - there is profound use of color in my work. My love of color has its origin from diverse traditional African cultures and values, such as the use of bright colors in decorative attires and masks used in cultural festivals. I use color not only to communicate mood, create energy and contrast or depict an illusion of space and light, but also very importantly for decorative aesthetics and visual appeal.
